Gardens in the City
Not long ago, many empty spaces between city buildings were full of rubbish and weeds. Today, some of them look very different. Neighbours have turned them into community gardens, where they grow vegetables, fruit and flowers together. Gardens like these can now be found in large cities and small towns all over the world, and they are becoming more popular every year.
The idea is simple. A local council or a group of neighbours finds a piece of land that nobody is using. The land is then divided into small plots, and each person or family looks after one of them. Members usually pay a small fee for water and tools. Many gardens also have a shared area where volunteers grow herbs or organise activities for local schools. Children who visit learn where their food comes from, and some of them even try vegetables that they refuse to eat at home.
People join for different reasons. Many want to eat fresh food that they have grown themselves. Others are looking for a hobby that keeps them active outdoors. For older people who live alone, the garden is often a place to meet others and have a chat.
However, community gardens also have problems. In some neighbourhoods, there are long waiting lists because there are not enough plots for everyone. Water can be expensive, especially during hot, dry summers. In addition, the land is sometimes worth a lot of money, so the owners may decide to sell it to a building company. When this happens, gardeners can lose years of hard work in a very short time.
All in all, community gardens are much more than places to grow tomatoes. They make cities greener, bring neighbours together and help people to lead healthier lives. For these reasons, local councils should protect them, so that these gardens can improve city life for many years to come.
