A Good Night's Sleep

Everybody knows that healthy food and exercise are good for us, but sleep is often forgotten. Doctors say that most adults need between seven and nine hours a night. However, many people regularly sleep less.

Why do so many people sleep badly? One of the main reasons is technology. Many of us look at our phones in bed until late. The light from the screen can make the brain think it is still daytime, so it may be harder to fall asleep. Another reason is that people are often worried about work, money or family, and their minds stay busy at night. Finally, some people go to bed and get up at very different times, for example, because their working hours change every week. This confuses the body's natural clock.

One bad night is not a big problem, but when it happens often, the effects can be serious. People who sleep too little find it hard to concentrate, so they make more mistakes at work or school. They are also more likely to be in a bad mood and to argue with others. Tired drivers are a danger on the road, and over time a lack of sleep can make it easier to catch colds and other illnesses.

Fortunately, small changes can make a big difference. Experts recommend going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, even at weekends. It also helps to leave your phone in another room, or at least to switch off all screens an hour before bedtime. Instead, you can do something calm, such as reading or having a warm shower. If sleep problems continue, see a doctor.

All in all, sleep is just as important for our health as food and exercise. We plan our meals and our time at the gym, so why not plan our nights too? After all, a good day often starts the night before.
